I set up the group in 2007 after moving up to Nottinghamshire from London and finding it hard to find other lesbian activities around Nottingham.
I heard of the (currently inactive) Single Women Into Food and Talk group (SWIFT) and met up with them for a meal, which led me to hear about the Hiking Dykes. I joined that group too, and found that there were lots of interesting women around, who all wanted to do more things but didn't always know how to get in touch with other like-minded people.
I decided to set up a group which is email and internet based, allowing women to get in touch when they want a companion or group of people to meet up with to do something that suits them, such as a cinema or concert visit, a game of football or badminton, or just a meet in the park. The idea is that the people in the group organise themselves and make things happen locally. It's not a dating site, though some people have found a partner through the group. Most importantly, the group is free so anyone can join. Members have to be approved, but it's a simple question of saying hello and then following the ethos of the group.
